Stress & Overwhelm

Stress is a normal part of life, but when too much builds up for too long, it can start to affect how we think, feel, sleep, relate to others and move through everyday life.

Sometimes stress comes from one obvious situation. Other times it develops gradually through work pressure, relationship difficulties, financial concerns, health worries, major life changes or simply carrying too much for too long.

You may notice stress showing up as:

* Feeling overwhelmed or constantly under pressure

* Difficulty switching off

* Irritability or becoming more reactive than usual

* Racing thoughts or overthinking

* Physical tension, restlessness or fatigue

* Trouble concentrating or making decisions

* Feeling like there is always something else you need to deal with

You don’t need to wait until everything feels unmanageable before talking about it.

Counselling can provide a calm space to slow things down, understand what may be contributing to the pressure you’re experiencing, and consider practical ways to create a little more clarity, balance and breathing room.

Sometimes the goal isn’t to eliminate every source of stress.

It may simply be to understand what you’re carrying, recognise what is and isn’t within your control, and take one manageable step at a time.

A limited number of online counselling and wellbeing sessions are available by arrangement.

What is stress?

You could be experiencing Stress if you’re going through a divorce, going through a breakup, being discriminated against, have a health concern, losing a job or starting a new job, experiencing a change in financial status, or many other experiences that are overwhelming you.

“Stress is a response to a threat in any given situation and is the body’s way of protecting you,” says Senior Clinical Psychologist and Head of Clinical Services at Black Dog Institute, Laura Kampel.

If we don’t learn to control stress, it can quickly get out of hand and cause a lot more challenges to the body and mind in a relatively short period of time. Stress not worked on can often lead to Anger issues due to a lack of control of the thoughts taking control of your mind.

Working together utilising a holistic approach, will work towards identifying life events that contribute to stress and assist you in changing, accepting, or adapting to those circumstances. You will learn to recognise, control and in time replace the negative thoughts and behaviour patterns that can lead to stress. We will develop your abilities to manage the symptoms and issues, as well as to recognise and minimise future stress.
